Series: Paranormalcy #1
Release date: 31st August, 2010
Pages: 335 (Hardcover bought for me)
Second book: Supernaturally
Summary from Goodreads:
Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.
Review By Alaiel Kreuz:
So... I've been sitting in front of my laptop rubbing my temples and wondering how am I going to write this review... You see, I have a problem. I liked the book, I completely loved the cover (for those who know me, pretty covers are one of the things I care a lot in a book) and the way Kiersten writes was fluent and very entertaining. But... there, you see? I have a BUT and I don't like that (is it me or this sounded very bad?! xD). Anyway, let me explain this.
We see the story from Evie's point of view. She is a sixteen year old girl working for IPCA tracking paranormals to make sure they don't hurt humans but all she wants is to be "normal". And what is normal, you ask. Well, for her this is normal: she wants to go to high school, have a locker, have some friends to hang out and a couple of cute guys to flirt with. And this is what she gets: she is home-schooled by a werewolf, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex is a faerie, her boss fullfils more less the role of "mother" (Evie is orphan) and her best weapon is a pink taser with rhinestones called Tasey.
She is funny and sweet, maybe a little bit annoying sometimes being so naive and all but I really enjoyed her. I mean, you must have a very strong personality to wear a zebra-print wrap dress with pink stiletto boots. And to own a pink taser with rhinestones. I think her style is unique and cool, kudos for that! (I love crazy, funny, sweet outfits, hehe.)
And her relationship with Lend (hot and sweet shape-shifter/water-boy) was one of the things I loved the most. They don't rush into things, first they became friends and then things develop in a very pleasant way.
My favorite character was Lish, the mermaid, and the computer's translation of her phrases. My favorite quote is:
"Bleep stupid bleep bleep faeries and their bleep bleep bleep obsessions. He had better stop bleep bleep bleep the bleep bleep rules or I will bleep bleep bleep the little bleeeeeeeeeeep.”
But for me, something was missing. I don't know... I think I was expecting more action, more intrigue somehow and the easy breazy path of the book was too calm for me. And the ending... oh my goodness the ending... where was it?! I think I missed it, no kidding. It just happened, like that, in a second. Sorry for those who loved this book but I truly believe that the ending had a lot more potential than that. The plot between Evie and Fire-girl had everything to make a superb final and... it never came.
Saying that, believe me, I already have the second book and I'm going to read it for sure because:
- I had a great time reading Paranormalcy.
- I enjoyed Evie's mind (so cute and funny!).
- I seriously want to know what happens next.
- I want to read more about Lend and Reth (crazy ex faerie boyfriend).
