Guest post: "The making of Kaliel" by Rhiannon Paille

Today I have a great surprise: a guest post from Rhiannon Paille, author of "Flame of Surrender"! So, withour further ado because I know you want to read it, I leave you in her hands and, trust me, you are going to enjoy this moment.

The making of Kaliel
A Guest Post by Rhiannon Paille

Where do I begin with a girl that is a weapon? Even then, where do I begin with a character that took me years to get to know?

Kaliel originally came to me as a shy, fragile bird. The first thing I clearly remember about her is a flash of her running through the forest. She darted around a giant tree trunk and vanished. I replayed the scene in my mind over and over, memorizing the stunning whites she appeared in. Snow white curly hair, knee length ivory dress, ivory slippers, pale skin. I saw her from behind so I didn’t know who she was at the time, but I wanted to talk to her.

It took years to get her to open up to me and tell me about herself, but when she did it was as though I had tipped off an avalanche and her entire story came tumbling out at me. I knew the end before I knew the beginning and the details of her peculiarity were left out of the mix.

She was more concerned with the story part of her story and how she felt about what had happened to her. At the time it was a skeleton of a story, bits and pieces she allowed me to see without being able to form a full picture of it. I kept at it, writing down the scenes she would give me and attempting to fill in the blanks for the rest of it. Every time I sat down with Kaliel in the back of my mind and tried to write out her story, she would give me more. She filled up enough stuff in my mind to fill six books, even twelve books if I wanted to go that far.

Her story was timeless and she always played the same part, the helpless destroyer. I say helpless because there were always circumstances surrounding her destruction, she never meant to destroy anything.

I diligently wrote notes about her story and eventually I finished the first book which was all she ever asked me to accomplish. There was more she had shown me, more I wanted to write about her, but to say she was afraid of letting me write it is an understatement. Half the time she told me she didn’t think anyone should see her story, that it was too horrible for public consumption.

I told her it was unlike anything anyone had ever read, that nobody knew about the flames.

She told me that knowledge about her had been erased because of the dangers associated with her kind. Not only was she hunted by those who wished to possess her and use her, but she was also a danger to herself. She often wondered if people were ready for her story yet, if they were ready to know about the flames.

I looked her up on google too, the violet flame, I read about her and all of her past incarnations. I asked if she wanted me to write about the time she had been in China, or the time she had been associated with Archangels and she said no. She said she wanted me to write about the time she was in love with the Ferryman and all the bad things that had happened because of it.

Over the years and the many conversations I had with her, I began to piece together her personality. Once upon a time she was carefree, living in a beautiful place. She loved the idea of danger, but didn’t want to encounter actual danger. She felt different than the others that accepted her, and she fought for a way to belong. Her life didn’t turn out the way she had planned. She fell in love and that love was forbidden, but it wasn’t wrong. She was naïve, enchanting, unexpected, innocent, genuine, and mysterious. She was also rebellious, curious, afraid and troubled. There was always an inner turmoil going on inside of her as though she knew that she had done something horrible and couldn’t take it back. She was sometimes fierce, sometimes resentful, and sometimes pessimistic. Despite all of that she was always in love with Krishani, a deep, intense, all encompassing, crushing kind of love that stood against all the odds and survived. Despite the horrible things she had done and the horrible things that had happened to her, the one that never died in her story was her love for Krishani. It was a sort of constant, driving force behind everything that she went through.

I couldn’t ignore a character like her, so shy and weak on the outside, so dangerous and volatile on the inside. I had to tell her story the way she had experienced it in order to do her justice. Letting it stay hidden wasn’t an option.

I hope when you read FoS that you take the time to step into Kaliel’s shoes and experience the story the way I experienced it while writing it.

Namaste,
Rhi

Flame of Surrender
by Rhiannon Paille

Official Blurb:

The boy who follows death meets the girl who could cause the apocalypse.

Krishani thinks he’s doomed until he meets Kaliel, the one girl on the island of Avristar who isn’t afraid of him. She’s unlike the other girls, she swims with merfolk, talks to trees and blooms flowers with her touch. What he doesn’t know is that she’s a flame, one of nine individually hand crafted weapons, hidden in the body of a seemingly harmless girl.

Nobody has fallen in love with a flame until now. She becomes Krishani’s refuge from the dreams of death and the weather abilities he can’t control. Striking down thousand year old trees with lightning isn’t something he tries to do, it just happens. When the Ferryman dies, Krishani knows that he’s the next and that a lifetime of following death is his destiny.

And Kaliel can’t come with him. The Valtanyana are hunting the flames, the safest place for her is Avristar. Krishani can’t bear to leave her, and one innocent mistake grants the Valtanyana access to their mystical island. They’re coming for Kaliel, and they won’t stop until every last living creature on Avristar is dead. She has to choose, hide, face them, or awaken the flame and potentially destroy herself.

Interview: Marilena Mexi, author of "Antara"

    Interview with Marilena Mexi
     Author of: Antara

Alaiel: Hi Marilena, I'm really happy that you accepted not only the interview but also to share here some of your paintings and artwork for Antara.

    Questions about yourself.-

Alaiel: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Marilena: First of all, thank you for giving me the chance to say a few things for myself and Antara. I live and work in Greece, I'm a professional illustrator and I mostly work with publishers / writers. I make book illustrations, game cards, I'm an awarded artist from various cg sites, and my work has been published in various magazines.

Alaiel: Do you have a special place to write?
Marilena: I don't have any special place to write, but I'd say special moments. The most inspiring moments come to me when I'm calm and happy, and there's absolute silence in the house. Then I relax listening to atmospheric music and try to focus on writing, trying to get into my book hero's mind.

Alaiel: You are also a great illustrator, what drove you to combine writing and painting?
Marilena: First of all, thank you for your kind words. I've always wanted to write a book and illustrate it. that makes me feel a complete artist, and writing is as important as illustrating for me now. When people ask me why I don't make a book without illustrations, my answer is this: Illustration is my soul, and writing is my body. And the one can't live without the other.

Peace and tranquility on the island of Aster, home to both humans and 'merfolk', has long been broken by a devastating phenomenon, recurring every five years. A storm including gusting winds and huge waves mysteriously appeared and eradicated much of the population.

The misunderstandings, suspicion and hate born of this disaster have torn the two races apart, and the peace loving merfolk are now in a never-ending struggle to prove their innocence and restore peace to the island. On the human side, things are even worse; under the tyranny of cruel king Orestis, the people suffer and all their king cares for is vengeance against the "fish", as he spitefully calls them, executing merfolk after merfolk for just being near his lands. Secrets, intense emotions and strange phenomena will upset their lives forever.

Interview: Jessie Harrel author of "Destined"

    Interview with Jessie Harrell
     Author of: Destined

Alaiel: Thanks a lot for the interview, Jessie, I’m so glad you accepted!

    Questions about yourself.-

Alaiel: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Jessie: I wish I was more interesting, but I’m pretty much your typical bookworm. Studied hard through high school and college. Went to law school, did the whole big firm thing, left to go to a tiny firm (so much better!) and I’m raising kids with my amazing hubby while trying to squeeze in writing time when I can. I LOVE to travel and spent six weeks in Greece when I was in college. I’ve actually been to some of the places in Destined.

Alaiel: What is your favorite book? Why?
Jessie: At this moment, "Where She Went" by Gayle Forman. All I can say is that is was AWESOME. The emotions were real and raw and it made me feel on so many different levels.

Alaiel: Where is your favorite place to write?
Jessie: I love when I have the time to go somewhere like a coffee shop, but really, there’s no bad place to write. If I’m writing, I’m happy.

Alaiel: When you are blocked what do you do?
Jessie: Research. I’m usually stumped because I don’t know the answer to a question. Once I get the answer, ideas click into place.

A quick thanks and introducing the new looks in the "Review/Library" tab!

First of all thank you for every comment in my post "So... what's up with Twilight?". Your opinions were really enlightening. Now I have a better idea of why or what creates this whole "anti-Twilight" thing and it's been interesting to read your point of view.

Second, I don't know if some of you have noticed that my "Review/Library" was becoming bigger and bigger and that it didn't have any order in particular... which was really annoying... So I decided to improve it a couple of days ago and i finished it yesterday night! Woohoo!!!

Now at the top of the page you will find a small shelf with 4 covers:
    - The first one is for "YA and Sci-Fi". I had to shorten the name to make it fit the cover but take a look at what you can find there.
    - The second one is for "Mangas and Comics". Right now I only have one review but give me a couple of days more and you will find more material there :)
    - The third one is "Erotic" so this one is for adults only ;)
    - And the last one is an Index where you can find a list with all the reviews ordered by book's name.

Just press any cover and you will be taken to the proper shelf or scroll-down to take a look at all of them.

I really want to make your experience in my blog as pleasant as it can be, that's why I take all this time to study HTML and create these shelves so if you have any suggestions leave me a comment and I will check it, promised! :D

    Have a great week!

    So... what's up with Twilight?

Out of curiosity I need to ask you all a question:

Can anyone explain me what's the problem with Twilight?!

And don't get me wrong, if you have a problem with Stephenie Meyer's work I'm not going to say anything about it but... why is so much people annoyed with the series?

From where I see it, there has been good things and bad things after the big fuzz of the series.

    Good things:

    - Let's face it, a LOT of young people started to read again (and most of them for the first time) books, real books, not magazines or well, magazines xD
    - Stephenie is, actually, a good writer. And a very nice person.
    - After Twilight a lot of indie authors or new brand authors got the opportunity to be published.

    Bad, really bad things:

    - Vampires were supposed to be cool, sexy and crazy, now in a lot of YA books they are sweet, caring and most likely very annoying with their "oh, please, stay away from me, I'm evil" stuff.
    - Trying to use to the big fuzz of Twilight classics, real and amazing classics like "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice were re-edited with new covers to match the Twilight covers... and I have to ask to the editors and publishers: what's wrong with you, people?! Seriously?! Like Twilight?! Those books have nothing to do with Twilight!!!
    Here the sad prove:

As you can see this happened in the UK version and the Spanish version of the books.
    - There are a THOUSAND books that have the same start (if not the whole book) as Twilight. The same, with no difference. Where is the originality dear authors? I'm sure you can do so much better.
    - Vampires are everywhere therefore they are becoming so freaking normal that it hurts. They were supposed to be special.
    - I go to the cinema to watch every movie but that doesn't mean I like the actors because sorry but I didn't picture most of them like that... (please, fans of the actors, don't kill me, alright? Please).

So, as you can see, there's a lot of things that I don't like after Twilight. But I LIKE Twilight, I really do. I enjoyed every second with every book.
Ok, no, that's a lie, I hated New Moon, the whole book was really annoying... But I liked the series in general and I don't blame it for all the horrible things that happened after it. So, why the hate? I would really like to know your opinion, good or bad, about my post. Just be honest, I won't bite xD (bad joke, I know).

    Book Review: Starcrossed

    Starcrossed

    by Josephine Angelini
    Series: Starcrossed #1
    Release date: 31st May, 2011
    Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 514 (paperback bought by me)
    Next book: Dreamless

    Summary from Goodreads:

Set on the island of Nantucket, STARCROSSED tells the tale of Helen Hamilton, a young woman whose destiny is forever altered when she meets Lucas Delos and tries to kill him in front of her entire high school. Which is terribly inconvenient, not only because Lucas is the most beautiful boy on the island, but also because Helen is so achingly shy she suffers physical pain whenever she is given too much attention.

Making matters worse, Helen is beginning to suspect she’s going crazy. Whenever she’s near Lucas or any member of his family she sees the ghostly apparitions of three women weeping bloody tears, and suffers the burden of an intense and irrational hate. She soon learns that she and Lucas are destined to play the leading roles in a Greek tragedy that the Three Fates insist on repeating over and over again throughout history. Like her namesake, Helen of Troy, she’s destined to start a war by falling in love. But even though Lucas and Helen can see their own star-crossed destiny, they’re still powerfully attracted to each other. Will they give up their personal happiness for the greater good, or risk it all to be together?

  • Q. If you could pick one character in a book, movie or television show
to swap places who would it be?

Hum, I would have to choose between two possibilities:

    - Cyllan Anassan from The Time Master Trilogy because, let's face it, Tarod has been my secret crush for at least 12 years. Yes, he is THAT hot and amazing.

    - Any vampire from The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice because I would LOVE to be next to Lestat, my other secret crush for at least 12 years too, and because I would love to be a vampire.

Ok, just in case, let me clarify that: I don't want to be a sweet, caring vampire, I prefer the old ones, like Lestat: bossy and cool with a touch of madness and tenderness.

And, to all my new and old followers, thanks for passing by and don't forget to enter in my ebook giveaway for Parallel here.

    Battle Grounds
A Guest Post by Claudia Lefeve

First off, thank you Alaiel for having me as a guest today on your blog! For those following my book tour, I’m sure some of you are wondering what’s up with my grand-prize giveaway.

Well, it all started with the idea of having my two main characters meet for the first time in a public location. Originally, I had Etta and Cooper meet at a party, but that ended up not working with the storyline. So instead of a college kegger, a coffee shop it became.

After awhile, the coffee shop kind of became its own character in the story, with coffee itself playing a recurring role throughout the book (no doubt due to all the cappuccinos I drank while writing it). And while there’s no lack for coffee in the very real locale of Old Town Alexandria, I chose to make Battle Grounds a fictional coffee house.

In Parallel, Battle Grounds is the only place that remains the same in both realities. Traveling to an alternate reality can be pretty disorienting, so this is both a comfort and a constant for Etta. I have a feeling Battle Grounds will remain unaltered in the various other realities Etta travels to throughout the series.

And the logo? The area of Old Town is both classic and eclectic, so I wanted something vintage and edgy, reflective of the type of scene you’d find in Old Town. There’s also another reason for the design. I totally love skulls, so I wanted to incorporate a little part of me into the logo.

So there you have it, the winner of the grand-prize giveaway will not only receive a one-of-a-kind Battle Grounds travel mug (designed by yours truly), but a bracelet adorned with a coffee mug and a skull charm, designed exclusively for the tour.

    Holidays, Wedding & Honeymoon

Don't tell me the name of the post doesn't sound like the name of a movie xD

Anywho, how are you all?! It's been almost a month since I could really sit down and write a review or a descent post but somehow it feels like a year... So many things happened in one month, some of them good, some really good and a terrible and horrible one... sigh...

I wasn't sure about telling you all the sad part of the story but I know that you will understand how I feel.

My now-husband proposed to me almost a year ago and I said yes. My parents knew all about it since Juanma asked my dad first (how old fashioned is that?!). He took my dad to a restaurant and they chit-chat about the weather, Switzerland (we were moving here in less than a month), how where my parents doing with the boxes in our house (they were moving to Peru) and then the moment arrived and Juanma poped the question to my dad and his reaction was priceless: "Ostras! Esto sí que no me lo esperaba!" ===> "Shit! I wasn't expecting this!" Believe me, this reaction coming from a man that worked all his life as a diplomat is GREAT xD
And then all he said was: "Well, yeah, I think you both love each other so my answer is yes *looking to the sides* but you know that if she says no then there's nothing I can do, right?".

Hahahaha. Sorry dad, but you were awesome.

Anyway, my parents knew but Juanma's parents didn't. Why? Because he knew his mom wasn't going to be happy about it so he decided to wait a few more months.

I have lived in a lot of countries and travelled to a lot more so my room was filled with pictures, gifts and books... hundreds of books and mangas. All my things were precious to me. Why? Because all of them had a meaning in my life. Maybe because they remembered me of a person that I met, maybe because they remembered me of a certain moment, a certain place, a certain feeling.
And since my parents were moving to Peru I had to find a place for all my boxes until I could bring them with me to Switzerland. I had the perfect person for that but Juanma convinced me to leave them at his parent's house. At first I didn't want to, I knew his mom didn't like me that much but I didn't want to fight with him because of her, I mean, she is his mom, period. So we took them there.

And I'm sure you all are thinking: "No... come on, don't tell me she... No, that's impossible, is too much". Well, she did. As soon as she found out we were going to get married and without his dad knowing she opened each box (18 boxes), took everything in them (clothes, shoes, pictures, gifts, jewelry, my monkey -the one my mom bought for me when I was in her belly- and my precious books and mangas) and threw everything away.
We found out the first day of our holidays, when we arrived to his hometown.

Why did she do that? Well, to stop the wedding of course. Needless to say it didn't work but the first week I was devastated and so was Juanma.

But you know what? At least this showed us that we love each other no matter what and that we won't let the other fall into despair.
Oh, and his mom? She is out of the picture completely. She even said that Juanma asked her to do it and when she noticed that lie was simply too much she just confirmed screaming out loud that she hated me for taking her boy. So yeah, she is completely out of our life.

What am I going to do about everything I lost? Good question. I decided that I want to rebuild my whole collection of books and mangas. It might take a few years, I'm not sure, I need to sit down and write a list of all the books and mangas I had to know how much money I will need but... well, I'm not sure I want to sit and do it, it still hurts to think about them.
The clothes and jewelry I don't really care too much. The worst part is that there's no way I can buy all the special things I collected during my life.

Anywho, after this happened everything was perfect: the wedding was amazing, Juanma's boss and co-workers surprised us with at least two kilos of rice coming our way and the small reception was sweet and funny.

The honeymoon was terrific! I mean, it's impossible to go to Disneyland Paris and not have fun xD

Pictures coming soon, I promise! I just need to choose a few ones to show you because, believe me, you don't want me to show you all the pictures we have... they are at least 350 pictures. At least.

Now all I have to do is sit and write all the reviews of the books I read this month... and that's going to take a while... I need to remember to take notes, sigh.

Oh, and BTW, I missed you all so much! :D
