Rue lives in the quiet little town of Calvary, Minnesota...nestled in the thick woods lining the great lakes. Rue, along with her brother Kai have lived an otherwise calm life up until their Mother was commited into Rolling River Asylum, after she mysteriously stopped speaking to anyone. Rue is convinced by her brother to attend a party on her birthday and after she experiences something that she cannot explain, she and everyone in her world is thrown into madness. Join Rue on this epic journey, 6 books in all, as she struggles with grief, love, humor, old crushes, new found infatuations, hot boys AND vampires, lots and lots of them.

This first book in the series starts you on a journey that you will find hard to ignore and once you start reading you will be hooked...or perhaps bitten.

Review By Alaiel Kreuz:

I'm sure we all know tons of books about vampires and maybe, you are just tired of them. Well, don't be. Rue Volley, the author of this series, introduces us to a new kind of vampire. Forget the feeding on blood stuff, the "if I go out and the sun hits me I'll burn to death" and the "garlic and crosses are a big no".

The story begins with Rue, our main character trying to survive her brother's cooking skill (or the lack of it to be honest) and visiting their mother, Grace, who suddenly a year ago stopped talking and had to get into an asylum.
After visiting their mother Kai (Rue's brother) convinces her to go to a party and it is there that the story begins to develop... Jonathan, her secret crush, shows a lot of interest for her and after a few misunderstandings they go to the woods and start making out. But something weird happens and Rue is suddenly covered in flames, blue flames, and this triggers something in Jonathan who tries to hurt her.
Of course she is saved by a Protector. And what is a Protector, you ask. Well, this is the tricky part...
Samantha saves Rue and after introducing her to Josh (Sam's brother) reveals that Kai and Rue are not humans but Protectors too, just like their parents who are now missing. Protectors are vampires, but they don't feed on blood, they feed on energy (mostly) and they, a long time ago, used to protect people... but after an intern war caused by Caine some of these Protectors had to run away like Rue's parents, and the ones who stayed at Valon (their city) begun to feed on human energy.

But Rue is special and a very difficult destiny awaits her now...

What I liked the most was the love triangle "Josh-Rue-Jonathan", I mean, who doesn't want to be desired by two hot guys?! But I'm Team Josh, no doubt. He is sexy, funny, sarcastic and caring and he just knows how to tease Rue.
We also have a lot of funny situations with Kai trying to seduce Samantha (and most of the times she knocks him down)and Theodore (Sam and Josh's brother) who is... well, a very funny and special guy.

The only reason I don't give this book 5 cheeses is because the writing, at the beginning of the story, was a little repetitive but it improves after a while.

Hopefully I'll read the second book soon, I can't wait to see what happens next... the ending left me with my mouth open... and I need to close it soon!
