Book Review: The Ghost and the Goth

The Ghost and the Goth

by Stacey Kade
Series: The Ghost and the Goth #1
Release date: 29th June, 2010
Publisher: Hyperion
Pages: 281 (Hardcover bought for me)
Second book: Queen of the Dead

Summary from Goodreads:

After a close encounter with the front end of a school bus, Alona Dare goes from Homecoming Queen to Queen of the Dead. Now she’s stuck as a spirit in the land of the living with no sign of the big, bright light to take her away. To make matters worse, the only person who might be able to help her is Will Killian, a total loser outcast. He alone can see and hear (turns out he’s been “blessed” with the ability to communicate with the dead), but he wants nothing to do with the former mean girl of Groundsboro High.

Alona has never needed anyone for anything, and now she’s supposed to expose her deepest, darkest secrets to this pseudo-goth boy? Right. She’s not telling anyone what really happened the day she died, not even to save her eternal soul. And Will’s not filling out any volunteer forms to help her cross to the other side. He only has a few more weeks until his graduation, when he can strike out on his own and find a place with less spiritual interference. But he has to survive and stay out of the psych ward until then. Can they get over their mutual distrust—and the weird attraction between them—to work together before Alona vanishes for good and Will is locked up for seeing things that don’t exist?

Review By Alaiel Kreuz:

We all know the typical popular girl, right? Beautiful, bitchy, annoying and cruel. That's how I define them, at least most of them. But not Alona Dare, not the Alona Dare. Yes, she is cruel most of the time but not because she wants to but because she thinks it's the right thing to do. I mean, hello? If someone is using a horrible outfit you have to tell them that just by looking at them you feel nauseous, right? At least that's what she believes...
But don't get me wrong, she is a nice girl deep inside but she also knows that to be popular you have to work (really, work) a lot. You are not going to be popular just because of your pretty face but because you are PERFECT in every single thing. And she is perfect. Or that is what she makes everybody think... far from it her story is very sad and difficult.

But this book is not only about Alona, we also have a male character that shares the book with her. And I say share because we see the story from their point of view and this is one of the things I liked the most because Stacey managed to tell the story from Will's point of view and it was terrific!
Will Killian is a got (or so everybody thinks) and he can see, speak and touch spirits. Yep, pretty cool, huh? Well, not for him. Until now the only thing that his "gift" has given to him is headaches and troubles... he even ended up in an asylum for a little while. So yeah, he hides his ability most of the time... until Alona dies and they have to cooperate in order to surpass the big problem that is coming their way.

What I like the most? The interactions between Will and Alona. Picture this: the popular dead girl talking with the nothing popular alive guy? It was utterly funny to see them fight and argue about different things like Will's shirt or how Alona needs to say something nice every time she says something not nice if she doesn't want to disappear.

I had a great time reading this book: is a quick read, is funny, is touching and interesting. I can't wait to read the second book!

  7. I LOVED this book. I think the relationship that develops between Will & Alona is my favorite part of the book as well. They are just so funny...kinda reminds me of the fast back 'n forth dialogue of old movies like His Girl Friday :)

  14. I've really wanted to read this series for a while. Hopefully I'll get to it soon. I've often thought it would be highly inconvenient to see and hear ghosts. I know I'd end up in an insane asylum for certain.

    Great Review!
