Summary from Goodreads:
A girl with an unknown destiny.
A boy from a hidden world.
When Celeste starts at a new school in a small, Kansas town, she hears whispering voices, has vivid nightmares, and swarms of blackbirds follow her every move. She is oddly drawn to aloof Rylan, the other new student who has his own secrets.
The exact moment she turns seventeen, she wakes to a bedroom full of strange creatures, purple light emanating from her hands, and Rylan breaking in through her bedroom window.
He knows what she is . . .
Intriguing and deeply romantic, RUA is page-turning YA novel with a supernatural twist.
Review By Alaiel Kreuz:
Since the summary doesn't say too much about it I'm going to do a quick walktrough without spoilers so don't worry.
First we have Celeste, our main character that, due to her dad's job is used to move from city to city a lot. Meaning no friends to bond with and no real place to call home. But her adoptive parents were amazingly cool and loving so she didn't care that much.
Gladly for her she became friend with Tink, a sweet and caring guy that sadly for her was also very gay.
And in her very firstday of school she met Rylan. A sexy, misterious guy that was also new. but the most intriguing part is what he says to her when they first talk: "You are one of them, right?". And trust me, Celeste was as puzzled as you are right now.
And right there something becomes very clear. During her 17th birthday Celeste is going to change somehow. And the creepy dark figures that she spots around her, the black birds following her around and her misterious headaches whenever she is close to Rylan have a reason.
Who is she and what is happening to her? Why is it that Rylan is always in her thoughts? Why is he with Jennifer, the prettiest girl in school, when he is always looking at Celeste? And what is Tink's real name?!
Personal opinion:
First, I have to point out the obvious. That cover is freaking beautiful!!! I love everything about it, from the colors to the design and so very thought full, 'cause, just in case you wonder, the cover fits perfectly the plot ;) As always Phatpuppy Art did an amazing job!
Rua was, no doubt, a very interesting, quick and cool read. Actually, I finished it in a couple of hours without stop. And that can also mean I liked it a lot.
The characters felt very real and were very diverse which I appreciated a lot. The fact that I had to move a lot when I was younger for my dad's job helped me connect with Celeste much more and I understood her way better.
My favorite character was of course Tink. I mean, a guy with a nickname like that can only be awesome, right? He is, I'm telling you. Friendly, funny, caring and loyal, what else would you need?
And then we have Rylan, the swoon worthy guy. With him I'm not sure what I feel. And don't get me wrong, once we get to know him the guy seems perfect. Sexy, protective, with a few secrets of his own and willing to help Celeste no matter what.
But there is something, you know? Something that makes me nervous and for the live of me I can't wait to read the sequel 'cause, there has to be a sequel, right?! I sure hope so!
