Book Review: If I Die

If I Die

by Rachel Vincent
Series: Soul Screamers #5
Release date: 27th September, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin
Pages: 342 (paperback copy bought by me)

Summary from Goodreads:

The entire school's talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee's no ordinary high-school junior. She's a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it's a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee's going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend's needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren't quite human, either.

But Kaylee's borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

Review By Alaiel Kreuz:

After a girl in her class collapses in the middle of a lesson and starts bleeding for non-obvious reason Kaylee wonders if this may be a new problem to solve. Not that she wouldn't mind a few more weeks of peace (that seem to avoid her at all costs) but a girl has to do what a girl has to do, right? Especially if Emma, her best friend, could be the next target.

But Kaylee's destiny seems to have other plans and everything is put in a new perspective when Tod arrives with terrible news: Kaylee is going to die in 6 days. And there's nothing and no one that can stop it.

Knowing that she will soon leave her family and friends changes everything and nothing at the same time: she wants to leave everybody with hope after she is gone, wants to destroy this new threat to protect Emma and all the girls at her school and, most importantly, wants to lose her virginity with Nash. Because she loves him, right? Despite what he did to her she loves him... Or that's what she wants to believe.

In only 6 days Kaylee's world will turn upside down and this time she can't avoid it.

Personal opinion:
The fifth book comes full of action, intrigue, tension, despair and love so make sure to have a fan, some pills for your blood pressure and something to drink. You will need it. Badly.

I can say, with complete honesty, that this book is by far my favorite of the whole series. The fact that Kaylee (and us) knew about her imminent death created a whole new level of pressure and uneasiness during the whole book that never disappeared. In fact, when I almost had reached the end I stopped reading... I was so anxious that I needed a break.
Besides, Rachel did and amazing job here, I had a lot of theories of what could happen but none of them seamed good enough or at least I was afraid that the ending would have a HUGE cliffhanger.

Thank goodness that didin't happen!

Talking about the characters I can only say that all of them have a spot, all of them have a purpose and all contribute with something crucial.
Kaylee and Nash's relationship reaches the climax. Somehow Sabine and Kaylee also begin to work together in a surreal partnership (that made me laugh and smile a lot!).
And something amazing happens: Tod, who is already amazing, funny, sweet and cool, becomes even better. Scratch that, he is frigging amazing.

And the plot won't disappoint you at all, it lacks nothing. A rollercoaster of emotions, new information and twists will keep you turning pages non-stop.

So yes, if you scroll down a little bit you will see a new rating. I've been thinking about creating a new one for the books that I couldn't help but adore and love. And this book was what I needed to sit and do it.
