Summary from Goodreads:

Devastated by a terrible loss, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else–a monster threatening to tear her apart.

As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.

Review By Alaiel Kreuz:

You know why is it always so difficult to write a review for a book that is part of a series? Because we, reviewers, are dying to share a lot of information, and quotes, and parts of the plot that are key for readers to enjoy the bigger picture.

Here with Shift it's the same all over again, sigh. You see, how can I keep my mouth shut (or my fingers from writing) about so much awesomeness?! It's simply too difficult.
But I have to persevere and give you all a useful review, right? That's what I thought.

So, where to begin? Well, first of all I have to say that this is previous of my bigger review coming tomorrow about the third book so don't forget to read it! *cough* Giveaway coming too *cough*

In the first book, Exiled, the Goddess names Chase the Protector and gives him a special ring. It's also where Chase's mom dies and where he has the first confrontation with his father in years. As things begin to develop Chase understand a few predicaments:
- His father wants to resurrect the evil Goddess, Ithrael, thinking that he will be able to control her and all the Underworlders.
- The ring the Goddess gave him is actually very dangerous to his life since everyone wants to get it and would do anything to do so.
- Despite better judgement right now it's very important to destroy the ring... but the only way is to go to another dimension, a horrible and dangerous place called Theral, so he can retrieve a god's weapon and do it.

Thankfully for him he is never alone. This time he travels not only with Rayna and Willy but also Tiki, Vincent and Marcus.
And I'm not joking when I say they go through hell in this adventure. But you see, this is what I most like about Mr.Merrick's way of writing: he can, in some way that I can't even begin to comprehend, write a series of different plots inside the same book and lead, all of them, to one big mind-blowing ending that will leave you waiting for more pages to magically appear in your reader.
How? Beats me, I have no clue. I just know that I was so frigging grateful for having the third book in my reader already that I almost cried.

What else can I say? Seriously guys, after the ending of the first book I was dying to get to see Willy's development and oh boy did he developed! A-MA-ZING! I love Willy. And I love Vincent. Because let's face it, bad boys (or men) do have their appealing.

And Rayna. Sweet-amazing-kickass Rayna is the one that gives the book it's title (or at least most of it) as she has to face not only her past once again but also her future as she needs to learn how to control her ability without dying in the process. And it might kill her so easily...

As for romance, yes, we got it! We got it! And it was everything I expected and more. No rushing at all. Everything happened in the right moment in the right amount.

So, I can't say anymore without giving away spoilers... my final sentence is: Buy the series if you like awesome characters and plots. It won't disappoint you at all!
